Policeman given suspended sentence for stealing Avatar DVD from Dubai airport duty-free

A policeman was given a suspended six-month sentence on Wednesday for stealing a DVD of the movie Avatar from a duty-free shop.

Emirati MN, 23, failed to appear before Dubai Criminal Court in March 2011 to face a charge of theft and it was not clear why the case had taken so long for a verdict.

The Emirati had been suspended from work and a recent address for him was not available for prosecutors to summon him for court hearings.

MN, who worked at Dubai airport in the goods inspection section, took the epic James Cameron science-fiction film and hid it in his jacket pocket without paying.

SP, the saleswoman at the shop, told prosecutors that she saw the defendant take the DVD and informed security.

Again, he was not present on Wednesday at the criminal court for sentencing.
