Respect Dubai?s cultural norms, PH consulate warns OFWs

The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), reminded all Filipinos and foreigners coming into the conservative Muslim state to respect their cultural?norms after two Filipinos were reportedly jailed for cross-dressing in public.

?When visiting or living in Muslim countries especially in the Middle East, foreigners should always be mindful and sensitive to the cultural and religious sensitivities of their hosts,? he said.

Two Filipinos, a 34-year-old fashion designer and a 44-year-old tailor, were apprehended by police at the Al Rigga Metro Station last March for cross-dressing.

They were jailed for a month and were given deportation orders.

Both had admitted during police interrogation that they were cross-dressing which, they said, they had been doing since they were young.
