Visitor jailed for possessing methadone pills

A visitor has been jailed for four years for smuggling 194 methadone pills and 20 half-tablets of the same drug that he claimed to possess for medical purposes.

Prosecutors had accused the 44-year-old Iranian defendant, H.S., of smuggling and possessing 194 pills of methadone and 20 half-pills of the same drug for promotional purposes.

He was also accused of consuming methadone and hashish.The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted H.S. of smuggling and possessing methadone after he contended that he possessed the pills for medical purposes and not for promotion.

He admitted that he consumed the drug in Iran.
